How to Write Real Good – The Grammar Pack from The Oatmeal

theoatmeal by matthew inman

There ain’t nothing boring about grammar. Grammar is, in fact, a devotion to eradicating boredom. The rules of grammar ensure that the party stays live, the words bounce, and the messages are fresh. Starchy grammarians and unfortunate educational experiences have tripped up popular perceptions, and lead many towards an existence of ignorance and disdain for good communication.

Despite misconceptions, good writing and communication skills are not hard to come by. With only a few basic grammar rules, the world can be an even better place.

But how do we communicate those rules? Especially to folks who fear clarification, and find english grammar a snooze. The answer obviously, is comics.

Good ol’ Matt Inman over at The Oatmeal has been crafting deliciously twisted comics to great acclaim. His comics are beautifully absurd observations; tender and yet often savage approaches to the workings of the world. He is also a lover of the well-written word.

The Oatmeal has a complete series of comics addressing the basic rules of grammar. It’s practical advice for those disenfranchised from good communication by their eighth grade teachers.

Grammar is important stuff for everyday letter writing, business communication, and notes to you mom. Inman makes this stuff accessible. He punches it full of gorillas and vomiting pandas; bizarrely entertaining examples that engage and somehow make absolute common sense.

Here’s the Grammar Series by The Oatmeal:

What it Means When You Say “literally”

When to Use i.e In a Sentence

How to Use a Semicolon  The most feared punctuation on earth!

How to Use an Apostrophe

Ten Words You Need to Stop Misspelling

For those looking to decorate your office, or home, or classroom, you can order a whole set of posters entitled The Grammar Pack. Probably a good gift.

Also a few other grammatical comics on The Oatmeal, including apt considerations of the usage of irony, and apt consideration on the use of flesh out vs. flush out.
